At Orange Coast College, a 164-acre campus located in Costa Mesa California, a new planetarium is now being worked on. It received an astronomical increase recently in a donation of a million dollars, from retired instructor Mary McChesney it used to have. This money will be used to fund a device that is used to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth called a Foucault pendulum.
The officials of the college say it is the only pendulum of its kind at the university. The officials started to break ground on the planetarium in 2016. A planetarium that existed in the 1950s became torn down. That planetarium seated only an audience of 35 people. The new one will seat 129. Also, there will be an exhibit hall which features a giant display globe. Along with serving OCC students, the new planetarium will also serve kids from grades Kindergarten to twelfth grade.
The budget overall for the planetarium is approximately twenty million dollars. So far, the planetarium has gotten $2.6 million dollars in the project. The majority of the fund will come from a bond measure from 2012. The officials of college want the planetarium completed by the fall 2018 semester. The remainder of this article will focus on Orange Coast College in general.
